Van Gogh Self-Portrait – Impressionist Icon Skateboard Wall Art

Van Gogh painted more than 35 self-portraits between 1886 and 1889 — more than almost any artist before him except Rembrandt. He painted himself because models cost money he did not have. The self-portraits track his mental state over three years in Paris and Arles: the early ones are experimental, influenced by Impressionism and Japanese prints; the later ones are raw and intense. He used short, deliberate brushstrokes spiralling around the face and background. Most of his self-portraits are at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam or the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
