Quentin Matsys – The Ugly Duchess Skateboard Wall Art – Premium Canadian Maple Deck

Quentin Matsys painted A Grotesque Old Woman (known as The Ugly Duchess) around 1513 in Antwerp. The elderly woman is dressed in fashionable but outdated early 15th-century court costume, holding a red rose — traditionally a symbol of love. The painting is thought to satirise women who dress and flirt beyond their age. Leonardo da Vinci made anatomical grotesque drawings that likely inspired Matsys, and the two artists may have known each other. The painting became famous when John Tenniel used it as the basis for the Duchess in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. It is at the National Gallery in London.
