The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared on the tilma (cloak) of Juan Diego in December 1531, according to Catholic tradition — nine years after the Spanish conquest of Mexico. The image shows a young dark-skinned woman with indigenous features standing on a crescent moon, surrounded by rays of light. The tilma is preserved at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world. The image became central to Mexican identity and the evangelization of the Americas.
