Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa between approximately 1503 and 1519. The sitter is believed to be Lisa Gherardini, wife of the Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo — hence the Italian title La Gioconda. Leonardo used a technique he called sfumato: fine layers of translucent glaze applied over months to create soft transitions between light and shadow. The smile has no hard edge — it disappears when you look directly at it and reappears in peripheral vision. Napoleon kept the painting in his bedroom before it entered the Louvre, where it has been since 1797.
