Leonardo da Vinci painted The Annunciation around 1472–1475, when he was still working in Verrocchio's Florence workshop. The Angel Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary to announce she will bear the son of God. Leonardo placed the scene in a precisely rendered Tuscan garden — his background landscape with distant mountains disappearing into atmospheric haze shows the earliest documented use of aerial perspective in Western painting. The painting is at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
