Leonardo da Vinci painted the Benois Madonna around 1478–1480, early in his Florentine period. One of only a handful of works attributed to him with certainty — a private, intimate moment showing the Virgin playing with the infant Christ and a small flower. The painting is now at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
