Gustav Klimt painted Judith I in 1901. The Old Testament heroine Judith seduced and beheaded the Assyrian general Holofernes to save her city — a subject painted many times, usually showing Judith heroic and modest. Klimt painted her different: half-naked, eyes half-closed, fingers gripping Holofernes's severed head almost absentmindedly. The gold necklace, the gold background, the decorative flatness — all typical of Klimt's Golden Phase, influenced by Byzantine mosaics he saw in Ravenna. The painting is at the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna.
