Gustav Klimt painted The Kiss in 1907–1908 using real gold leaf alongside oil paint — a technique he borrowed from Byzantine mosaics he saw in Ravenna. The Austrian government bought the painting before it even left Klimt's studio. The couple's identities remain unknown; many believe the man is Klimt himself. It hangs at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna.
