Albrecht Dürer drew Praying Hands in 1508 as a preparatory study for the Heller Altarpiece, commissioned by the Frankfurt merchant Jakob Heller. The altarpiece itself was destroyed by fire in 1615. The study survived — and became more famous than the painting it was made for. Dürer used it to work out the position of a figure of an apostle in the centre panel. The drawing is now at the Albertina Museum in Vienna.
