Peter Paul Rubens painted Samson and Delilah around 1609–1610, shortly after returning to Antwerp from Italy. The Old Testament scene shows Delilah cradling the sleeping Samson while a barber cuts his hair — the source of his strength — as Philistine soldiers wait in the doorway. Rubens renders Delilah's complicity with extraordinary psychological subtlety: her face is calm, almost tender. The painting was bought by the National Gallery in London in 1980 for £2.5 million, at the time one of the highest prices ever paid for an Old Master.
