Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper between 1495 and 1498 on the refectory wall of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan — a commission from Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. Leonardo painted it in tempera on plaster rather than true fresco, which meant it began deteriorating within decades. The painting captures the moment Christ says "One of you will betray me" — each of the twelve apostles reacting differently. It has survived Allied bombing in 1943 (the wall remained standing), decades of neglect, and a 22-year restoration completed in 1999. It remains in Milan.
