The koi fish in Japanese art is associated with perseverance, good fortune, and transformation — drawn from the legend of a carp swimming upstream to become a dragon. This design uses the ukiyo-e woodblock print tradition: flat colour areas, bold outlines, waves rendered as patterns rather than forms. Koi imagery appeared widely in Japanese prints from the Edo period (1603–1868) onward and remains one of the most recognised Japanese visual motifs internationally.
