Edmund Leighton painted The Accolade in 1901. A queen knights a young warrior while a crowd watches from behind. Leighton was a leading Victorian painter of medieval subjects — his work was popular in Britain at the peak of the Arts and Crafts and Arthurian revival. The scene is fictionalised but follows the historical ceremony of knighthood closely. The painting is at a private collection.
