Quick answer: How long wall art lasts depends far more on where you hang it than on what it is made of. Placement beats material

What light actually does

Ultraviolet radiation breaks down the chemical bonds in pigments and dyes. The molecule that produced a particular colour stops producing it, and the colour shifts or disappears.

Three things follow.

It is cumulative and irreversible. Fading does not repair itself when you move the piece. Every hour of exposure is spent permanently.

Colours fade unevenly. Different pigments have different stability. Yellows and magentas typically go first, which is why old prints often drift toward cyan and look cold — it is not that blue was added, but that its counterparts left.

Indirect daylight still counts. A bright room with no direct sun still delivers UV, just far less of it. The distinction that matters is direct sunbeams falling on the surface, not overall room brightness.

Humidity and temperature

Light causes fading. Humidity causes everything else.

Paper absorbs and releases moisture, expanding and contracting as it does. Repeated cycling makes it cockle — the rippling you see in old framed prints — and in a frame it can press against the glazing. Sustained damp allows mould, which appears as small brown spots.

Wood also responds to moisture, but cross-laminated plywood is specifically engineered against it: each ply's grain runs across the next, so the layers restrain one another instead of the whole board cupping. This is the same reason it works structurally on a skateboard.

Temperature matters mainly through swings rather than absolute values. A stable cool room is kinder than a room that is hot by day and cold at night, which is why an unheated garage or loft is a poor place to store artwork.

Two points worth drawing out.

Cheap paper destroys itself. Ordinary newsprint and poster stock contains lignin, which breaks down over time and turns the paper acidic and brown regardless of how it is displayed. That is why a poster in a drawer still yellows. Acid-free paper removes this failure mode entirely — it is the single biggest difference between a cheap and a good paper print.

Glazing is a trade. Glass, especially UV-filtering glass, meaningfully slows fading. It also creates a sealed cavity where condensation can form and stay, which is the origin of foxing and the reason framed prints struggle in bathrooms and kitchens. Two things are worth knowing about them.

They measure materials, not products. A rating belongs to a specific pigment or ink formulation tested under specific conditions. It does not automatically transfer to a finished object made with that ink on a different substrate.

Accelerated testing is not a calendar. Converting a laboratory result into "X years on your wall" requires assumptions about how much light your wall receives. Change the assumption and the number changes enormously. This is exactly why published year-figures vary so wildly between sellers making the same claim.

Why we do not quote a number

The image is applied by direct-to-substrate UV printing, which cures the ink onto a sealed maple surface so that it bonds into it rather than sitting on a paper layer that can lift, cockle or yellow. What actually helps

Since placement dominates, this is where the useful advice is.

Keep artwork out of direct sunbeams. Not out of bright rooms — out of the path the sun actually traces across the wall. Watch a wall over a day before committing something you care about to it. A piece that catches an hour of low morning sun is in a very different position from one lit from midday to evening.

Rotate pieces if you have several. Swapping what hangs in the sunniest position every year or two spreads the exposure. Museums do a version of this for the same reason.

Use blinds or sheer curtains on the sunniest window. This protects everything in the room, including furniture and flooring, which fade for exactly the same reason.

Avoid direct heat. Above radiators, stoves and fireplaces the air is hot and dry, which is hard on both paper and wood.

Ventilate humid rooms. Bathrooms and kitchens are fine for suitable materials provided the moisture actually leaves. An extractor fan does more for artwork longevity in those rooms than any material choice.
