From Street to Wall: The Evolution of Skateboard Graphics

Skateboard Art

Skateboard graphics connect the object people ride with the visual culture around it. A graphic can identify a brand or rider, tell a joke, present an illustration or become the main reason someone keeps a deck.

Recognisable graphics and brand identity

Powell Peralta identifies The Ripper as a graphic illustrated by Vernon Courtlandt Johnson in 1983. Santa Cruz credits Jim Phillips with the Screaming Hand. These are useful, documented examples of artwork becoming closely associated with a skate brand.

Their appeal is not a reliable prediction of resale value. An old deck, a modern reissue and a newly produced decorative edition need to be described separately.

Different ways to make an image

Skateboard designs can use illustration, typography, photography or painting. Production methods also vary: a graphic may be printed directly, applied through a transfer process or painted by hand.

The method alone does not tell you whether the image is well executed. Look at the actual finish, cropping and detail on the product.

Bringing a deck into an interior

On a wall, the deck is viewed without the movement and wear of skating. Its shape and edges become part of the composition. A familiar graphic can read as a cultural reference; an unfamiliar one can work simply as an image.

Choose it with the same care you would give a print: consider scale, colour and what you enjoy looking at. Skateboard wall art does not require a themed room or a claim that every deck belongs in a museum.
