Screen Printing in Skateboard Graphics: History and Process

Skateboard Art

Screen printing is one process used in skateboard graphics. Its role should be explained alongside transfer printing and other methods rather than described as a single lost craft replaced everywhere by digital production.

What the process does

Screen printing passes ink through a prepared screen to form an image. Colours may be applied in separate stages.

In skateboard production, screen printing can be used directly or to produce a transfer that is subsequently applied to the deck.

Distinguish the stages

Designing a graphic digitally does not determine how it is physically printed. A digitally prepared image can be part of a screen-print workflow.

Likewise, a heat transfer is a production method, not proof that the graphic is a cheap adhesive sticker.

Look at the finished image

Check registration, edge detail, colour appearance and cropping. Different processes can achieve different visual effects, and the individual execution matters.

Intentional variation in a hand-produced object should be described accurately rather than automatically labelled a valuable defect.

Research a particular release

Use manufacturer descriptions and dated product records when discussing how an older deck was produced. Avoid universal dates for when one technique supposedly disappeared.

Ask about the actual product

If process matters to your purchase, request a clear description. Claims about archival performance or an exact lifespan need product-specific evidence.

The history is more interesting when techniques are identified precisely, without invented premiums or a guaranteed hierarchy of quality.
